Online shopping has evolved and improved in leaps and bounds over the past few years.

It’s easier than it ever has been for consumers to shop online, whether that’s from your mobile device, laptop, desktop, or tablet.

While shopping in-store won’t be disappearing any time soon, especially amongst the older generations, the convenience of online shopping cannot be overlooked.

In fact, 'about 70% of Britons say buying online and on mobile phones have become their preferred shopping method', emphasising its popularity.

As consumer behaviour is always shifting, ecommerce brands must keep up with the latest ecommerce trends to stay relevant.

Ecommerce trends for 2023 include, but are not limited to:

  1. Social commerce
  2. Mobile shopping
  3. Personalisation
  4. Augmented Reality and Virtual Reality
  5. Artificial Intelligence (AI)
  6. Sustainable shopping

1. Social Commerce

The first ecommerce trend in 2023 is social commerce.

Social media platforms, including TikTok, Instagram, Facebook, and Pinterest are becoming increasingly popular for ecommerce brands to advertise and sell their products.

With the likes of Instagram Shops and Facebook Marketplace, users can purchase products from brands without needing to leave the platform.

In turn, this makes the shopping experience highly convenient and reduces the likelihood of consumers abandoning their shopping carts.

As creator marketing continues to evolve and mature, social commerce will undoubtedly remain a relevant trend for years to come.

2. Mobile Shopping

Mobile shopping has been a trend for years but is showing absolutely no sign of slowing down in 2023.

This isn’t surprising considering ‘90 percent of adults own a smartphone, with around 95 percent of those smartphones used daily’, emphasising the vast potential for ecommerce brands.

Mobile shopping encompasses any purchasing activity made on an app or mobile browser, from engagement with mobile ads to browsing brands from your smartphone.

As such, ecommerce brands should be focusing on mobile-friendly ads and content to capitalise on the acceleration of mobile shopping.

3. Personalisation

Another trend ecommerce brands shouldn’t overlook in 2023 is personalisation.

Consumers are seeking tailored ecommerce experiences, emphasised by the fact that according to Shopify, ‘49% of consumers said they would likely become repeat buyers if offered a personalized experience by a retail brand’.

Personalisation can be provided by ecommerce brands through numerous avenues to drive conversions, from product recommendations to tailored offers and discounts.

Provided brands are using customer-led data and targeted advertising, the power personalisation holds can be highly effective even during an economic downturn.

4. Augmented Reality & Virtual Reality

Augmented reality (AR) and Virtual Reality (VR) are another ecommerce trend brands will want to watch out for in 2023 and beyond.

AR and VR can enhance the shopping experience and are transforming the way consumers shop online, providing a more interactive element to online shopping.

For instance, AR brings a new meaning to the saying ‘try before you buy’, as it uses 3D mapping to allow customers to virtually try out products or visualise them at home before they actually make a purchase.

The integration of VR and AR technology, then, enables customers to make more informed decisions when it comes to buying.

5. Artificial Intelligence (AI)

With the rise of Artificial Intelligence (AI) tools, brands can quickly collect valuable data on customers’ shopping habits and behaviours.

This can involve gathering useful data on how a customer shops, preferences when browsing, as well as the time of purchase.

Armed with this information, brands can deliver a personalised shopping experience for consumers and improve inefficiencies.

As such, eccommerce brands can leverage AI to help create highly engaging ad campaigns that deliver maximum impact.

6. Sustainable Shopping

Last, but not least, a crucial ecommerce trend in 2023 is sustainable shopping.

Take the fashion industry, for instance. Of ‘the 100 billion garments produced each year, 92 million tonnes end up in landfills’, emphasising how prevalent the issue of fast fashion is in today’s society.

Bearing this in mind, it’s no surprise that consumers are becoming increasingly conscious of how their buying habits impact the planet, which in turn impacts their buying behaviour.

Brands can no longer turn a blind eye to the climate crisis. From recyclable packaging to ethical sourcing and manufacturing, brands must prioritise ways in which they can improve to become more sustainable in the long term.
